Today we will be talking about Jim Crow Laws. Below is a link to a website with several examples of Jim Crow Laws. Please read them quietly and be prepared to discuss them with the entire class.

Now that you have read several examples of Jim Crow laws in the post Civil War south, please respond to what you have learned. Please select a particular law that interested you and tell me why. How would you feel if that law affected you? Finally, I would like you to think of an example of an unjust rule or law that is in place here at Deering or maybe in your home and explain why it is unfair and how it should be changed. If you cannot think of an example than you should make up a rule/law.

            2. Explain the law and your personal interest in it

            3. How would it make you feel if the law affected you?

            4. Come up with an example of a “Jim Crow Law” in your life and how it affects you and how you would change it to make it just.

Hi Class,

Welcome to our very own Civil Rights Blog! This week we are beginning our unit on Civil Rights in the United States. This blog will be an essential tool for the unit. On this blog you will be able to access all sources and assignments here at school or anywhere you can get the Internet. You will also respond to writing prompts on the blog and even be asked to comment on your peer’s work. It is my hope that the blog will allow you to be fully prepared for the final assessment at the end of class.

            Let me start this unit off with a bit of good news. THERE WILL BE NO ASSIGNED HOMEWORK!!! You will have plenty of time to finish all your work during class. However, if you do not finish an assignment in class it is your responsibility to complete it at home, during study hall or in class if you have spare time.

            For your first assignment I would like you to post a comment on this entry. In this comment I would like you to describe your own background knowledge in Civil Rights. This could be something you have learned in the past, something you would like to learn, or a question you may have about the week ahead.
